The father of American pop art, Andy Warhol created the 12 foot canvas of Elvis Presley titled ‘Eight Elvises’ in 1963. It was purchased by a private collector for US$100 Million in 2009.

Garçon à la pipe (Boy with a pipe), Picasso’s  famous portrait of a Parisian boy (1905), became the first painting in the world to be auctioned off for more than US$104 Million in May 2004.

 

Dora Maar au Chat

Pablo Picasso, arguably the most famous and influential artist of the 20th century, painted the iconic ‘Dora Maar au chat’ (Dora Maar with Cat) in cubist style in 1941.  It fetched US$95.2 Million at Sotheby’s in 2006.

Renowned Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti’s masterpiece, the 6-foot-tall, bronze “L’Homme qui marche I” or “Walking Man 1” became the priciest sculpture in the world when it was sold for US$104.3 Million in 2010.

Picasso’s portrait of his lover Marie-Thérèse Walter, in the Nude, Green Leaves and Bust went under the hammer for US$106.5 million in 2010.  It took Picasso only one day to complete the painting in 1932.

The Scream, painted in 1895 by Norwegian expressionist Edvard Munch is one of the world’s most celebrated work of art. It was sold for US$119 million in 2012.

 

Adele Bloch-Bauer I

Austrian painter, Gustav Klimt’s remarkable 1907 portrait of ‘Adele Bloch-Bauer I’ fetched an estimated US$135 Million in 2006.

 

Woman III

In 2006, billionaire Steven A Cohen bought Woman III for US$148.5 Million. The painting was created by abstract expressionist painter Willem de Kooning in 1953.

 

No 5, 1948

American painter Jackson Pollock’s No 5, 1948 was sold for an estimated US$140 Million in 2006. The painting was created using the unique drip-and-pour technique for which Pollock was famous for.

 

The Card Players

The Card Players by impressionist Paul Cezanne became the most expensive painting ever sold, when it was purchased by the Qatar royalty for a stunning US$250 million in 2011.
