The Mysterious And Magical Bhutan
Nicknamed “Druk Yul” which denotes “Land of the Thunder Dragon” due to extreme storms that regularly come in from the Himalayas, the Kingdom of Bhutan has a very unique geography that brings about climatic variations to this small country in Southern Asia. The Kingdom only opened its door to foreign tourists in the seventies and is gradually being recognised as a unique travel destination. Although it is a landlocked country that lies between China and India, the mountainous Bhutan offers a divine traveling experience to tourists with its rich areas of biodiversity, high mountains and deep valleys, pristine environment as well as distinctive culture and customs.
Upon arriving at Bhutan’s one and only international airport, Paro Airport, the spectacular sight of the surroundings with a river meandering slowly down the valley will certainly sweep you off your feet. The Paro Valley is recognized as one of the widest and most beautiful valleys in the Kingdom. It is also home to a myriad temples and monasteries of which some were built in the 14th century. Must-see sites in Paro include the seven-storey National Museum, Drugyel Dzong or The Fortress of the Victorious Bhutanese and Bhutan’s most iconic landmark, Tiger’s Nest or Taktsang Monastery.Luxurious hotels and resortslike the Shangri-La of Bhutan make it easy and convenient for tourists to spend an enjoyable time here.
A tad of modernization awaits you in the capital town of Bhutan, Thimpu, an hour’s drive from Paro. Although modernity is slowly creeping in, traditions and cultures are still sturdily preserved. This city allows you to get to know about Bhutanese lifestyles more intimately as it is the main centre of commerce, religion and government. Here, you will find the National Library, Institute of Zorig Chusum (Arts & Crafts School), Folk Heritage Museum, National Textile Museum, Weekend Market and a host of other exciting places. The very unique characteristic of Thimpu is that this capital city has no traffic lights and policemen direct traffic instead.
Apart from sightseeing, tourists are drawn to the happening festivals in Bhutan. One of the many major festivals in Bhutan is Tshechu, a religious festival meaning “tenth day”, held annually in various temples, monasteries and dzongs(fortresses) throughout the country. The festival comes to life with religious mask dancing, the receiving of blessings as well as much socializing activities. For those who look forward to a more adventurous outing, Bhutan has trekking sites with picturesque Bhutanese landscape along the way.
The beauty of Bhutan is manifested through its people, environment and culture, and this draws tourists to the Kingdom. It is a great country that takes peace, environment, tradition and happiness earnestly and one can expect an awesome experience of a different kind when visiting the country.
