Legendary Guitars

Great musicians leave great legacies behind. Their extraordinary talents create awe, inspiration and motivation, stirring the soul in fascinating ways, to say the least. But none of these achievements would ever be possible without their signature musical instruments.

Eric Clapton’s Gold Leaf Stratocaster by Fender – $455,000
This guitar is just one of the many valuable guitars of Eric Clapton that went on auction. Made by Fender’s master builders Mark Kendrick and John Luis Campo, this iconic 24-carat gold plated Fender Stratocaster was made because Eric wanted a museum-worthy guitar. It was auctioned off to Christie’s Auction House for $455,000, but Fender Custom Shop, Fender’s custom guitar workshop, decided to reissue the guitar in 2008 with the same specification and build as the original. However, only 50 units were made.

Jimi Hendrix’s 1968 Stratocaster by Fender – $2 Million
Known as one of America’s greatest songwriter and as Rock and Roll Hall of Fame credits, “arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music”, one can expect Jimi’s toys to fetch a hefty price. Jimi played this guitar during the Woodstock Festival in 1969, which saw around 450,000 people in attendance for one of the most iconic moments in music history. The guitar was purchased on auction by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, but you can still find the reissue from Fender’s website.

Fender “Reach Out to Asia” Stratocaster – $2.7 Million
Another great piece of art from Fender, but this one was not owned by anyone (but it was for “everyone”). The guitar was auctioned in 2005 during the “Reach Out to Asia” charity auction in Dubai for the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami Disaster. The guitar carried 19 legendary autographs; Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian May, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Pete Townsend, Mark Knopfler, Ray Davis, Liam Gallagher, Ronnie Wood, Tony Iommi, Angus & Malcolm Young, Paul McCartney, Sting, Ritchie Blackmore and Def Leppard, and Bryan Adams who was the initiator.
